How can choice cards be used to help with expressive language issues in children with autism?

Just as break cards can make it easier for students with autism who suffer from expressive language issues to ask for breaks, choice cards can make the process of decision making less overwhelming. Choice cards, also known as choice boards, are a visual display of options. Choice cards can be used in a wide variety of situations such choosing a snack or choosing a recess activity. When first introducing choice cards, it is recommended to limit the amount of options to two, and to add more as the student becomes more proficient. Icons, clipart, and photos can be used. It is also best to include text along with the images.
